Cobre Nuevo Exploration

Cobre Nuevo Exploration (CNE) was formed in 2019 by Rod Davies, Mike Rennison and David Burt who were key members of the exploration team that discovered the giant Onto Cu-Au deposit in Indonesia in 2014 (1.7Bt @ 0.9% Cu, 0.52g/t Au).

They are continuing this successful association to provide project generation, project evaluation and other exploration consulting services as principals of CNE, a Private Company.

Our Business

Project Generation is CNE’s core activity, principally directed towards the discovery of magmatic arc related Cu and Au deposits. CNE currently has a strategic alliance with a major mining company to generate new projects with high potential to host porphyry copper deposits. Each Principal brings their own skill set complimenting those of their colleagues ensuring a holistic approach to project generation.

Project Assessment is a key area of expertise for CNE as the principals have developed considerable expertise related to the assessment the geological potential of third-party mineral exploration projects as well as internal company projects during their careers to date. A critical component of project assessment are field reviews which is a core strength of the group.

About Us

Rod Davies is a Sydney-based exploration geologist with a track record of significant discovery in a career that has been dominated by projects in the world’s young volcanic arcs. This has included project generation and exploration management roles where multi-million ounce gold and multi-million tonne copper resources have been discovered. Rod has also been responsible for identifying billion tonne non-metallic resources at high grade in a well-studied sedimentary basin. During the 1980’s Rod was Kennecott’s Site Manager and Chief Geologist on their Lihir Island project and was credited with the Minifie discovery and lead the team that drilled the first holes into the Kapit orebody. In 2004, Rod was engaged by Vale to manage their porphyry projects in Mongolia, a role that grew to project generation in Asia and beyond. Rod was intimately involved in the development of an exploration strategy for large copper-gold resources that led to Indonesia and the discovery of the world class Onto copper-gold deposit in 2014. Of late, Rod has been heavily involved in project generation for epithermal gold deposits in Japan. Rod is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Geoscientists with a B.Sc. Honours in Mining Geology and a M.Sc. in Remote Sensing and GIS.

Mike Rennison has over 25 years experience in the mineral exploration industry, across multiple countries and a broad range of commodities, with particular emphasis on copper exploration. Mike has held senior technical and management roles for BHP, Freeport and Vale. He has significant global business development and project assessment experience along with experience managing large, multi-country, multi-commodity exploration teams in the Asia-Pacific region. Mike has a strong technical and operational background, including brownfield exploration, and a particular interest in porphyry geochemistry. Mike played a leading role in the discovery of the world-class Onto copper-gold deposit in Indonesia that is now at an advanced resource stage. Mike graduated from the University of Canterbury with B.Sc. Honours degree in Geology and is a Member of The Australasian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy.

David Burt is an exploration geoscientist with over 25 years experience in the mining industry across numerous countries and commodities with a strong focus on copper in the Americas and Asia Pacific. David has held senior technical roles in geophysics, project generation, project appraisal and exploration management for a number of large companies. David has a wealth of experience in mineral exploration and project generation and has managed exploration teams across a diverse range of geographic and cultural environments. He has a strong interest in the large-scale earth processes which lead to the development of porphyry systems. While in Argentina he was directly involved in the discovery of the Eureka vein at the Cerro Negro epithermal gold project. He was the Exploration Manager of Indonesia during the discovery of the Onto copper-gold deposit. Most recently David has been working in Ecuador for BHP in their project generation group. David has a B.App.Sc. degree in Geophysics and is a Member of The Australasian Institute of Geoscientists.

Lithocap Exploration

CNE believe that the majority of future large greenfield porphyry Cu-Au discoveries will be made as the result of deep exploration of advanced argillic alteration (lithocap) systems. Recent examples of successful lithocap exploration programs are the very large Tujuh Bukit and Onto copper-gold deposits in Indonesia.
The CNE Principals have significant lithocap exploration experience across numerous volcanic arcs and geographies including Mongolia, Philippines, Indonesia, Ecuador, Japan, Turkey, Chile and Argentina. They have been directly involved in the discovery of mineralised porphyry stocks under lithocaps including the giant Onto Cu-Au deposit in Indonesia.
The CNE Principals have had significant success in the execution of lithocap exploration programs through the assessment of integrated mineralogy, geochemistry, geophysics and geology datasets.
CNE has developed targeting methodologies for lithocaps and believe that an increased potential for economic discoveries in these environments results from locating the higher-grade mineralisation that is commonly developed at the top of mineralised stocks. In addition, exploration of lithocaps may lead to the discovery of economic Au and Cu-Au mineralisation high within acid alteration systems.
